Learn about our deep-rooted history and guiding mission.

Established on December 16, 1870, the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church began as a beacon of hope. Our founders, 41 formerly enslaved people from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, created a new spiritual home in Jackson, Tennessee, laying the foundation for a vibrant and enduring community.
As a branch of Wesleyan Methodism, our church is composed primarily of African Americans and has grown to over 1.2 million members across the United States. Our compassionate outreach extends globally, with missions and sister churches in Haiti, Jamaica, and fourteen African nations, creating a truly international family of faith.
Our purpose is to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We fulfill this by serving our communities and the world as God's loving presence, committed to showing God's salvation and grace to everyone. We are dedicated to being a transforming church in a changing world, with a firm focus on salvation, education, and liberation.
Our beliefs are rooted in our motto: "God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family." This motto underscores our commitment to the Holy Trinity and our belief that all people are part of one human family under God.
Our church is structured to work together seamlessly through three main branches: the Executive Branch (College of Bishops), the Legislative Branch (General Conference Delegates), and the Judicial Branch (Judicial Council). This structure ensures the guidance and support needed to carry out our mission effectively.
Our boards and auxiliaries play a vital role in our ministry. They ensure the smooth operation of our church and support various programs that bring our mission to life, serving the needs of our community both near and far.
